Today was a special day at our school as we hosted members from MHIP – Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl, the largest women’s organization and NGO in Mizoram. MHIP representatives visited our campus to conduct a hands-on session on ‘buhthlei’ for students from Class II to Class IV. For those unfamiliar, ‘buhthlei’ is the traditional Mizo practice of cleaning and sorting raw rice before cooking – removing husks, stones, and discolored grains by hand. It’s a simple household skill, but one that carries deep cultural value.
Learning Beyond Textbooks :
Under MHIP’s patient guidance, our students sat in groups with plates of uncleaned rice and learned the technique step by step. They observed, practiced, and quickly understood.
Why this process matters:
It teaches patience, attention to detail, respect for food, and appreciation for the effort behind every meal. For many children, this was their first time experiencing ‘buhthlei’ directly. Moving from classroom lessons to real-life skills, they connected with a tradition that their grandparents practiced daily.
MHIP’s visit reminded us that education is not just about reading and writing – it’s also about preserving identity and values.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the MHIP team for taking time to share their knowledge and time with our students. Your effort in keeping Mizo traditions alive for the next generation is truly inspiring. Moments like these make our school more than just a place of study. It becomes a space where culture, community, and learning come together.
